“Welcome to the Apocalypse” ~ 3-book sci-fi/fantasy from D L Richardson

Posted in Books, dystopian, Fantasy, Release day, Science fiction with tags , , , , , , on May 18, 2018 by Vala Kaye

This game of survival just got real.

“Players. Welcome to the apocalypse.”

Book One – Pandora:

The Apocalypse Games is a state of the art virtual game, yet when it traps over 100 players inside, there’s reason to worry – their simulation pods are designed to last 3 days and the artificial intelligence is taking over.

Book Two – CyberNexis:

When rescue finally arrives, the players are transported to an offsite facility to recover from cyber sickness. Not all the players survived and not all is what it seems. What is CyberNexis hiding out in the desert?

Book Three – Primal Scream:

The disaster known as The Event has plunged the world into icy darkness. Humans can’t survive but a group of mutants can. All signs lead back to the simulation pods. What were they really designed for?

Join these characters on an emotional and fast-paced journey to explore what it really means to survive.

Excerpt from Book Three:

An overhead fan rotated against a backdrop of off-white perforated ceiling panels. Warm air wafted in through a circular vent to the right of the fan. The single fluorescent bar light was on – all the time, since this room had once been an office and the light switch was out in the hallway. On the other side of a locked door.

Reis Anderson lay on the bed with his knees bent and his hands behind his head. He stared up at fan and the vent and the light, fixated on them. The world as he knew it didn’t have electricity anymore. What people once took for granted had been taken away.

This room wasn’t an office now. It held a set of metal frame bunk beds like the type in army barracks with a surprisingly comfortable mattress. He ought to have cared about his confinement, but the mattress contoured to his body like nothing else had for the past three months.

Sleeping on hard, cold ground had caused a twinge in his lower back. Plus the bed smelled of fragrance instead of sulfur and dirt. His clothes were soft and his hair washed. When he touched surfaces, they didn’t bear the mark of ash and grime. Also in the room was a small round desk with an upholstered chair on the back wall, seated beneath a framed print of Monet’s famous water lilies. A plush sofa and a wall-mounted TV were on the side wall. This room was decorated like a compact hotel or a fancy prison cell depending on your point of view. Which made Reis wonder how many people his father planned on locking away.

Time and Forever Rone and Golden Quill Finalist 1800x2700 pixels (1)

Today I’m happy to feature my fellow author and LARA chapter mate, Susan B. James, and her lovely time travel romance Time and Forever, a 2015 Rone Finalist and Golden Quill Contest Finalist!

Here’s a bit about Time and Forever:

~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
1969. Love was free, man walked on the moon, and Sherry and Lorena found the loves of their lives. Sherry shared a kiss that dreams were made of, with a stranger on the tube in London. And ran away. Lorena found the love of her life in Los Angeles and married him.
2014. Sherry’s a successful businesswoman with two grown sons. Lorena’s an actress on a popular sitcom. Sherry’s husband dumped her for a younger woman eighteen years ago. Lorena’s husband died of cancer.
EXCERPT:
“Yeah. Right.” Sherry inhaled the marzipan aroma of her Almond champagne. Normally she never had a second glass, but it was her birthday and she loved the feel of the bubbles tickling down her throat and forming a pool of liquid courage in her stomach. “You know what? I’m tired of having the only male companionship in my life come from daydreams and romance novels. I want to be loved by a real person. I’m thinking of trying online dating.”
“Are you crazy?”
Sherry rolled her eyes. “I knew you’d say that.”
Lorena’s sharp tone attracted the attention of the diners at the next table. “Look! It’s Marley, the secretary on Looking for Love,” the woman informed her companion. She beamed at Lorena. “Hi, Marley.”
Lorena flipped back her streaked blonde bob, and gave the tourists her trademark ditzy smile.
Both women lifted their phones for a picture.
Lorena turned back to Sherry and continued in a lower voice. “You just cued the horror movie music in my head. When it comes to clichés, online dating is right up there with the let’s investigate moment where the heroine takes the flashlight and runs around the creepy house in the dark.”
“That’s ridiculous.” Sherry tried to lift one eyebrow and failed. “Lots of people are finding great matches online.”
Lorena shuddered. “Lots of people are not you. Honey, look at yourself. You’ve got lollipop green eyes and a sweet smile that says Take me, I’m vulnerable. You’d be Little Red Riding Hood inviting in the Wolf.”
“Stop that!” Sherry hated fairy tale comparisons. She’d been dealing with them her whole life. “You’re putting me off and I want to be encouraged. I want a chance at true love.”
Lorena passed her hands over her glass. “I am looking into the future and I see . . . You and a Corgi. It’s a perfect match.”
“I don’t want a dog, I want a human,” Sherry retorted.
“I don’t get it. You’ve gone twenty years without anyone. Why now?”
Praise and 5 Stars for Time and Forever from InDTale Magazine:
“Time and Forever” is imaginative and fresh with a love story reminiscent of the film “Somewhere In Time.”
Loaded with historical images, “Time and Forever” allows us to travel through time and easily experience 1969’s London and Los Angeles through the eyes of Sherry and Lorena; fully developed characters who make the reader feel they’ve been dear friends with them for ages. Both love stories are charming and heart-warming and–though time-travel isn’t a new concept–James’ version is unique and compelling.
The plot provides several well-I-didn’t-see-that-coming moments and keeps things flowing at a perfect pace. Book your ticket to 1969 with “Time and Forever” and if anyone ever finds The Castle, please let this reviewer know!
LEGEND OF THE TIMEKEEPERS – MG sci-fi/fantasy from Sharon Ledwith
Posted in Books, Fantasy, Middle Grade with tags , , , , , , , , on August 17, 2015 by Vala Kaye
There is no moving forward without first going back.
Lilith was a young girl with dreams and a family before the final destruction of Atlantis shattered those dreams and tore her family apart. Now refugees, Lilith and her father make their home in the Black Land. This strange, new country has no place in Lilith’s heart until a beloved high priestess introduces Lilith to her life purpose—to be a Timekeeper and keep time safe.
Summoned through the seventh arch of Atlantis by the Children of the Law of One, Lilith and her newfound friends are sent into Atlantis’s past, and given a task that will ultimately test their courage and try their faith in each other. Can the Timekeepers stop the dark magus Belial before he changes the seers’ prophecy? If they fail, then their future and the earth’s fate will be altered forever.
EXCERPT:
“Why are you here?” Lilith asked. “You’ve already got your life seal.”
“I have more questions for Istulo.” She continued to stare at the disk.
Lilith sighed. “My name is Lilith. What’s your name?”
Her shoulders relaxed slightly. A hint of a smile broke out on her face. Her upturned nose wiggled. “She-Aba. I was born here in the Black Land. Both my parents arrived from Atlantis fourteen years ago yesterday. My mother gave birth to me the next day.”
Lilith perked up. “That would make today your birthday!”
She-Aba beamed. “Yes. That’s why I’m here. For my birthday last year, I had my life reading done by Istulo. But recently, there’s been a hiccup in my plans. It’s like my life seal rearranged itself, and now I’m confused. I’m here for a reaffirmation.”
“What’s the problem?”
She-Aba traced her life seal with the tip of her perfectly shaped fingernail. “My lifetime occupation was supposed to be to design clothing for the people of the various positions in the court and temples.”
Lilith smirked. “That makes perfect sense.”
“I know, right? So why, all of a sudden, would my life seal change from designing clothing to something completely different?”
Lilith arched a fair brow. “How different?”
“Well, instead of clothing people in lavish robes and gowns for others to appreciate, the seal suggests that I’ll be doing the opposite by covering up and hiding the truth. I don’t understand it at all. I thought my life was all planned out for me.”
“I thought mine was too, until my country blew up and slid into the ocean,” Lilith muttered.
“Hey, look at the bright side, at least your hair isn’t red like mine.”
Lilith eyed She-Aba carefully. “What’s wrong with red hair? My uncle has red hair and it suits him fine.”
She-Aba moved in closer. “If you haven’t noticed already, there aren’t many redheads around here. The natives think red is magical, and anyone with red hair is considered a freak of nature.”
“That’s ridiculous!” Lilith said loud enough to cause an echo down the marble hallway. “Is that the reason why those artists were rude to you? Because you have red hair?”
“Red is a very powerful color,” a raspy voice said from behind both girls.
Lilith and She-Aba jumped. They slowly turned to find Istulo hovering over them.
Wearing the same white gown and orichalcum headband Lilith saw her dressed in before, Istulo nodded slightly before she said, “Red represents the essence of life—if we are drained of blood, we are drained of energy. The people of the Black Land understand this, and therefore red is reserved only for their gods and goddesses.”
Lilith giggled. “Don’t tell She-Aba that, she’ll think she’s a goddess.”
